Oli del Gorgos: A Mediterranean Space with a Contemporary Soul [Sonia Verdú Studio]

Sonia Verdú Studio, based in Dénia, has once again demonstrated how thoughtful design can connect tradition with modernity. In their latest commercial project, the studio was entrusted with designing a gourmet oil shop from the ground up, located in the charming town of Gata de Gorgos in Alicante.

A Structure that Embraces the Outdoors

The store’s architecture starts with a striking five-metre-high structure, impressive yet harmoniously integrated into the surrounding landscape. To reinforce the connection with nature, the design includes a large outdoor porch—ideal for enjoying the Mediterranean climate. This inviting exterior space includes a lounge area with armchairs by Point, offering views of the landscape, and a handcrafted wooden table with Vondom outdoor chairs, perfect for tasting the shop’s gourmet products.

The façade is clad in locally sourced natural stone, with black iron-framed windows adding contrast. The entrance is framed by a striking grey anthracite mosaic rug by Porcelanosa, which flows indoors and is flanked by large-format grey and beige porcelain tiles that enhance the warm tones of the materials used.

Timeless, Sustainable Materials

To strike a balance between authenticity and modernity, Sonia Verdú Studio selected high-quality natural materials. Clay finishes and textured ceramics bring depth and warmth, while sustainable porcelain surfaces from Porcelanosa provide both beauty and durability.

Inside, floors alternate between natural stone mosaics and large 120x120cm porcelain tiles. Bathrooms are finished with wave-textured surfaces that evoke the feel of concrete, along with light grey mosaic tiles that brighten the spaces.

Bespoke Design for a Distinctive Space

Every element of the interior was custom-designed to reflect the brand’s personality and the local spirit. In the centre, the most exclusive products are displayed, followed by a tailor-made service counter framed in black lacquer, with glazed ceramic latticework by Ferres.

Behind the counter, a handcrafted shelving unit showcases the shop’s star product: premium olive oil produced locally by the client. The main retail area is finished in walnut tones for warmth and sophistication, while the adjoining tasting area features oak wood, creating an inviting, differentiated environment.

A Space Made for the Senses

At the heart of the project lies the tasting area—designed to offer a fully immersive sensory experience. A custom-built pergola using cane and timber evokes rustic Mediterranean charm. This porch-style zone includes a small prep space and an exhibition area featuring handmade shelving clad in natural Ecoclay.

The standout feature: a magnificent three-metre-long natural wood table crafted in Andorra, created specifically for the store. It’s designed to bring people together to experience and celebrate local flavours in a warm, welcoming setting.

A Project Rooted in Place

Oli del Gorgos is a clear reflection of Sonia Verdú Studio’s commitment to timeless design, sustainability, and crafting spaces that honour their surroundings. Every texture, surface, and layout decision was made to create a space that feels lived-in, rooted, and ready to be enjoyed.
